To leave — and become a stranger in an unfamiliar place.
To live at home — and watch everything around you change.

Migration affects everyone.

Cases is an intense modern circus performance without words.
On stage — what its artists experienced on their own migration journey.

We believe tension grows where people don't know each other's stories.

And one real story makes another person easier to understand.
If you know what it's like to leave, you'll recognize yourself on stage.
If not — you'll recognize those who now live beside you.

Come.

What's in their suitcases

Arina

In my suitcase I would like to put: my favorite talisman toy, a mug from which it tastes best to drink, a large blanket, a painted brick wall that I pass every day, a cozy kitchen, the very day when my cheeks hurt from smiling, my friends, my favorite coffee shop, family. "You have excess baggage", I will hear at the airport. And I will go with one backpack — towards a new stage of life.

What important things are in your "suitcase"? Memories, toys, feelings, ghosts of the past, hopes for the future, living in the present, light or heavy? Can you control it all or is it better to relax and let go? Do you need to let go of the past to move on, or is it strangling you with a rope?

When you run away, you don't know what to take with you. You want to take everything and nothing. It's not you packing your suitcase, it's your fear, panic, and intuition. Intuition is the most important thing, because you don't know what you will need on this unplanned trip. And maybe in a few weeks you will be saved by a ping pong ball with messages written by someone important to you who is now far away. But if you packed your suitcase in time, you're already lucky!

What people say

"

I have to say I was rather impressed by the performance, it was a real high quality

"

The performance was very moving. The music further underlined the whole picture, and you could truly feel along with it. There were several goosebump moments — you could feel the weight of it, but also the hope. The acrobatic numbers were mesmerising and left us in awe. Thank you so much for this wonderful work

As a journalist and someone who has worked with inclusion for many years, I have been following Upsala-Circus since its very beginning. My son was delighted, and the memory of Upsala-Circus became important for both of us. It is wonderful that the projects you love and care about can also be packed into a suitcase

Upsala-Circus is an independent modern circus project from Zeitz, Germany — a small city where many migrants live and where, like across Europe, social tensions are growing.

We work with children and adults, rooted in the methods of circus pedagogy. Cases is made by our professional troupe — artists who know what it means to leave and start over.

We know what it means to keep going when things stop being possible. So we keep building — this circus, this project, everywhere we can reach.
