“Heiterkeit” offers no finished answers. It is a piece you experience.

A space where audience and artists walk a path together — through unrest, play, risk, laughter and vulnerability — and in doing so rediscover a simple thought: freedom never arises by itself. It arises between people.

Why do the ideas of the Bauhaus still matter to us 100 years later?

100 years ago, the artists of the Bauhaus were searching for new forms of art and new ways of living together. They experimented, questioned what was familiar, and created spaces through their festivals where people could come together and share an experience.

Today, many things feel uncertain again. What do people need when the world they know suddenly no longer feels familiar?

Heiterkeit

The title means more than simply being cheerful. It describes an attitude: staying open even in difficult situations, continuing to play, and not losing courage — the ability not to turn away from the tragic, but to keep living, keep creating, and stay together.

The legendary Bauhaus festivals were not simply entertainment or a break from work. They were artistic experiments in which familiar roles dissolved, hierarchies fell away, and creating together became a way to imagine a different society.

Laughter, play, dance and imagination became a form of freedom.

A hundred years later, we ask the question again. We are not only interested in history itself — we are interested in the human being.

  • How does a personal decision take shape?
  • What makes us free?
  • Can human dignity be preserved while the world goes through a crisis?
  • Can creating something together become a space where trust and a new sense of community can grow?

The performance offers no finished answers. It invites us to experience something together.

Upsala-Circus gGmbH, based in Zeitz, Saxony-Anhalt, works at the intersection of contemporary circus and the performing arts. Its productions bring together circus, theatre, dance and music, creating new ways of telling stories, experimenting and working together.

Alongside professional productions, Upsala-Circus develops interdisciplinary projects, residencies and international collaborations. Working with local communities, children and young people is also an important part of its practice — with the aim not only of presenting art, but of creating it together.
